Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Services

Woodland Healthcare offers the most complete range of rehabilitation programs in Yolo County, including: physical therapy, hand therapy, occupational therapy, sports/orthopedic therapy and speech therapy.

All therapy, whether it's for a sports injury or for severe head trauma, begins with a comprehensive evaluation by one of our licensed therapists. Treatment is individually tailored to each patient's needs and we work with patients to prevent their type of injury from recurring. Patients can schedule therapy on an outpatient basis, or sessions are available at bedside for those patients staying in the hospital.

We also offer "Back on Track," an education program for patients suffering from chronic back pain, disc injuries or other back problems. Back on Track provides patients with instruction in lifting techniques, posture and exercise to prevent future injury.

Speech Therapy

The speech therapists at Woodland Healthcare diagnose and treat speech and language disorders in patients of all ages, from infants to senior citizens.

Speech problems in children most often are caused by chronic middle-ear infections, poor oral habits or a physical anomaly such as a cleft palate. In addition to direct therapy with the child, our therapists provide parents with instruction in a home program.

Adult patients are most commonly seen for treatment of problems in swallowing or communication following a stroke or head injury. Problems in communication may involve speaking, understanding speech, reading or writing.

The Learning Center evaluates and treats individuals with learning disabilities or academic problems, providing instruction in reading, spelling and writing. Woodland Healthcare also treats patients of all ages for voice disorders, stuttering and aural rehabilitation.

Sports Medicine

From youth with sports injuries to arthritic adults, Woodland Healthcare specializes in treating outpatients for athletic injuries, work injuries and orthopedic problems. Among the specific ailments handled by our physical therapists are:

  • Knee injuries
  • Post-surgery and post-fracture rehabilitation
  • Tendonitis, "frozen shoulders," tennis elbow
  • Sprained ankles and foot strains
  • Muscle and ligament strains, arthritis

Woodland Healthcare provides a wide array of treatments, including:

  • Isokinetic equipment (Cybex) to test muscle strength and rehabilitate injured muscles
  • Stationary bicycles, pulleys and weights for aerobic conditioning and strengthening
  • Traditional physical therapy, including ultrasound, ice, moist heat and massage, and hydrotherapy
  • Electrical stimulation to strengthen muscles, reduce pain, muscle spasms and edema
  • Measurement and fitting of knee braces
  • Foot evaluation and fitting of foot orthotics

We also offer an Arthritis Pool Program with twice-a-week, half-hour exercise sessions in the pool for arthritis sufferers.

Hand Therapy

At Woodland Healthcare, we believe that hand therapy plays a significant and important role in the success of hand surgery. Our occupational therapists can help restore function of the arms and hands caused by work injury, fractures, tendon damage, burns, tendonitis and arthritis. We also treat patients with neurological impairments resulting in upper extremity dysfunction.

A team approach between the physician, therapist and patient is reinforced by a weekly Hand Clinic. The combined efforts help to achieve a common goal of functional restoration of the hand. Individually designed therapy for patients includes treatment in:

  • Wound care
  • Coordination and dexterity
  • Protective or corrective splinting
  • Muscle re-education or strengthening
  • Pain management
  • Range of motion and strengthening
  • Sensory re-education
